Reformer Pilates: Your First Lesson

Your first time on the reformer may seem daunting, or downright unthinkable, but with the right guidance you'll quickly discover just how simple and powerful it is.

Reformer Pilates is a smart, responsible way to improve your posture and freedom of movement.

Whether you spend hours behind a laptop, are recovering from an injury, or simply want to move with more strength and ease, reformer pilates supports you along the way.

The reformer is a powerful tool: it offers support where needed, challenges you where possible, and helps you perform each movement with control and precision.

Your body relearns how it wants to move—strong, fluid, and with ease.

For each exercise, our teacher provides step-by-step guidance on how to use the reformer, ensuring that you quickly join the class with confidence.

What can you expect?

What is a reformer?

Have you ever used a leg press machine? It feels somewhat similar. The difference is that you are not just moving the weight, you are also moving with the carriage as you push off the bar or pull on the ropes.

Lying, sitting or standing on a moving platform can feel uncomfortable at first. It takes time and practice to get used to it. Keep breathing calmly and follow the instructor.

What to wear & bring for class?

Wear something comfortable that allows you to move freely. Grip socks are not required, though some people like them because they prevent slipping. Ultimately, it's all about the right technique.

You don't need to bring a towel unless you like it of course. Although the training is hard, sweating is not a given.

Full-body workout.

Pilates on the reformer trains your entire body. You will engage muscles that you may never have felt before. Your core remains active during almost every exercise.

Some exercises focus more on the legs and core, such as barbell exercises. Others, such as Hug-a-Tree with ropes, focus more on the arms and core.

Different to a mat class.

Pilates on a reformer is very different from a mat class. While many principles are the same, you work on a sliding platform and use a spring resistance system.

Mat classes require you to stabilize yourself with your own body weight. If you have limited range of motion, some mat exercises may be difficult, while the reformer can provide support.

On the other hand, an exercise on the mat can be quite challenging but on the reformer it can be extremely challenging.

Reformer classes are often smaller in group size than mat classes, allowing for more personal attention.
